Divorce, Separation Agreements, & Property Settlements

Experienced Counsel

Divorce is formally known as a dissolution of marriage. In dissolution proceedings the court also make an equitable distribution of marital property. In certain circumstances valuations of property such as farmland or business operations are needed to make a fair distribution. In addition to the division of the marital estate the court may award a party spousal support or alimony.

Some individuals may decide to legally separate rather than divorce for personal and/or religious reasons. A legal separation would provide the parties with a division of assets and liabilities, establish custody for minor children and their support along with alimony if deemed appropriate. Although neither party can remarry, they may be allowed to continue being covered by their spouses medical insurance.
